Japan’s win 2-1 against Spain was not without controversy. Their second goal caused an uproar over social media with many claiming that VAR was mistaken in giving the goal.
The Group E of 2022’s FIFA World Cup turned out to be the “Group of Death” and Japan won each of Germany as well as Spain advancing to the round of 16 with the group’s winners. While Spain advanced as runners-up thanks to a higher goal differential, champions Germany was eliminated. The 2-1 victory of Japan over Spain was not without controversy. Their second goal has caused an uproar over social media with some suggesting that VAR did not have the right idea in allowing that goal, particularly as it led to the Germans being eliminated.
the Japanese player Ao Tanaka scored the goal in the 51st minute to give the Asian team the advantage. The goal was not given immediately, as the officials inspected whether the ball was over the line of play. After a long and thorough review, officials made the ball to Japan which put Japan ahead 2-1.
A VAR test was carried out and the results indicated that the ball in its entirety had not crossed the line of sight. However, numerous photos from the game were shared on social media platforms, which suggest that the ball crossed the line of contact, causing controversy.
What was the reason VAR decided in Japan’s favor?
It must be noted that even if it could be placed on the ground outside the touchline, the tangent was within the permitted limits. Thus, a small portion of the ball had been aligned with the touchline. This led officials to declare it an official goal.
FIFA declared they had confirmed that the “curvature of the ball” continued to be in, and the ball wasn’t out of play until that point.
According to IFAB which established the rules of the game, a ball is declared out in the event that “it is completely over the goal line, or touching the line on the ground, or up in the air”.
The plan ended up being the one that led to Germany’s exit from the event. Although they managed to secure a win of 4-2 over Costa Rica in a topsy-turvy game, Germany couldn’t progress to the Round of 16. Japan on the contrary has secured its place in the knockout stages as the group E winners.
